Jamestown S’klallam Tribal Community Housing Solutions Study
HKP Architects assisted the Beckwith Consulting Group on a comprehensive planning project for the Jamestown S’Klallam tribal community to address housing solutions. The study engaged Elders and tribal representatives through focus group workshops to gather input on housing criteria, challenges, and strategies. The target groups identified were 55+ disability, affordable family, workforce, and emergency/transitional housing.
Specific considerations for Elders included age-in-place housing and walkability, while workforce housing focused on proximity to the casino and accommodating the future workforce. Transitional housing would aim to bridge the gap between emergency shelter and permanent housing, and potentially include a small number of temporary dwellings.
The study identified a 5-year term, estimating a housing need of about 229-493 units. Site assessments were conducted at thirteen Jamestown S’Klallam properties with varied opportunities and issues at each location. The project culminated in an action plan focused on developing a master plan for utilities and transportation systems, confirming sites, and funding for these affordable and safe housing solutions tailored to the unique needs of the tribal community.
